Myanmar in 2017 is still a relatively untouched part of the world in terms of tourism and there are still parts of the country that are inaccessible due to the civil war in some remote areas. But don’t let that stop you from visiting.

The people of Myanmar are exceptionally friendly and encourage tourism in their country, which has made travelling around Myanmar incredibly easy. There are a variety of ways to get around including pickup trucks, buses, trains and airplanes.

There are many popular destinations in Myanmar and due to some of the country being ‘no go’ areas, travellers tend to take the same route around the country

Pick up truck from Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin

 

A pickup truck from Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin will cost 1500 Kyat and will take around 2 hours. Just make sure that you tell the driver where you want to get off in advance. They will try to charge you 2000 Kyat (extra 500 for your luggage) because you’re a tourist but just stick to your guns and they will eventually let it go.

Most people visit Pyin Oo Lwin just to get the train to Hsipaw. The train ride is slow but beautiful. An ordinary class ticket with the locals will cost 1200 kyat and an upper class ticket is 2700 Kyat. The only difference between the classes are the seat cushions.

Night bus from Hsipaw to Kalaw

 

If you plan on hiking/trekking, Hsipaw and Kalaw are the places to do it. Most people do a hike around Hsipaw for 2-3 days, get an over night bus to Kalaw for 16,500 Kyat and then trek from Kalaw to Inle lake for 2-3 days.
