There are 3 main Islands to explore in Si Phan Don (4000 Islands); Don Khong, Don Det and Don Khone.

Fun tid-bits:

Don Det and Don Khone are like sister islands with a connecting bridge and Don Khong is the least visited out of the three.

Don Det is the most popular amongst the younger travellers due to cheap accommodation and the chilled backpacker scene, whereas Don Khone attracts the older crowd.

Things to see and do:

… Not a lot but you can hire a bicycle for 10,000 Kip and cycle around the islands. I decided to cycle from Don Det to Don Khone (Cost to cross the bridge and visit the waterfall is 35,000 kip)

But there are also full day kayaking tours for 170,000 Kip which include breakfast and lunch, waterfalls and seeing the Irrawaddy dolphins

General Experience:

If you’re looking to relax in a bungalow or in a hammock, then a visit to 4000 islands is a must. It’s a great place to just look out over the river and read a book, but if you’re looking for a grand adventure then you will need to look elsewhere. Island life is slow, calm and lazy.

Many backpackers head to the islands to relax, drink and experience mushrooms (psychedelic drugs). It is a known fact that drugs are quite commonly sold and used here despite the police trying to crack down on them. Nevertheless, you will still enjoy your time on the island without the use of drugs, but just be prepared to be greatly outnumbered.

N.B: EDUCATINGKAVITA DOES NOT CONDONE THE USE OF RECREATIONAL DRUGS AND IS ONLY MENTIONING THEM AS A WARNING TO FUTURE VISITORS.
